A new call out service to help elderly residents who fall in their homes will free up ambulance medics to respond to more serious accidents.

The scheme, pioneered by The British Red Cross, in connection with local authorities, is set to be launched later this month.

Specially trained volunteers will be called out when an elderly householder has suffered a fall but are not hurt or requiring hospital treatment.

They will help the person up if they judge it to be safe, using specialised equipment if necessary, make them comfortable again and also offer emotional support and reassurance.

The Red Cross will deliver the service alongside Buckinghamshire County Council, Wycombe District Council and the Buckinghamshire Primary Care Trust Falls Team.

The organisation is now appealing for volunteers to join the project.

Fiona Leahy, Red Cross service manager for independent living, said: “We are very happy to be able to offer this service to older people in High Wycombe and now need dedicated volunteers who are able to spare a few hours a week to help.

“Full training will be given and you will gain a great sense of pride as you help some of the most vulnerable people in the community and help reduce the number of non emergency calls to the ambulance service.”

The Red Cross will meet with residents identified for the scheme by Buckinghamshire’s PCT and Wycombe District Council before the service begins.

Householders signed up to the service will have special equipment fitted by BCC that will be linked to WDC control centre.
