Patient dies of heart attack after nurse ‘dismisses chest pains as indigestion’

A patient died from a heart attack the day after a ‘dismissive’ nurse told him he was suffering indigestion, a misconduct hearing was told today.

Carl Gerrard, 43, made no notes of his flawed diagnosis and left to go to a meeting at the Ashworth Hospital, in Maghull, Liverpool, the Nursing and Midwifery Council heard.

Colleagues had to call an ambulance hours later after the patient turned ‘ashen’ and was sweaty, it was said.

Patient A died in hospital the next day, September 8, 2005 from a heart attack.
