A paramedic who was off work for six months after being attacked by a patient is suing ambulance bosses for £100,000 after claiming they did not tell her the call-out was dangerous.

Lynn Sutherland was punched and kicked by 16-year-old Grahame Donnelly after racing to his home amid fears he had taken an overdose of anti-depressants.

The 37-year-old suffered injuries to her arm, ribs, shoulder and neck while trying to restrain the teenager.

Ms Sutherland launched a legal action for damages against the Scottish Ambulance Service at the Court of Session in Edinburgh.

Her lawyers argue that the service failed to warn her that the teenager had already attacked his mother, adding that police should have been in attendance to provide support.

A paramedic who slapped a female patient across the face has been suspended for 12 months at a disciplinary hearing.

Philip Hillier, 53, was found guilty of misconduct by a Health Professions Council panel (HPC).

They ruled he had shown no remorse over the treatment of a woman he believed was faking injury in Cardiff in May 2010. His actions were said to pose a potential risk to patients as well a undermining the reputation of the Welsh Ambulance Service.

The panel heard Mr Hillier had been accused of an “unprovoked assault” on the 20-year-old woman during a call-out in Cardiff city centre.

He had found the woman apparently unconscious with back injuries at her home, but believed she was faking it. The tribunal reportedly heard he asked her why she was “being a silly b****”.

When ambulanceman Nick Horobin lost an eye in an attack eight years ago it looked as if his work as a carer was over.

He had to retire as an ambulance technician and, although he spent some time operating the ambulance switchboard, he desperately missed his job and working with the public.

Now he hopes to get a second chance at a frontline caring career as he retrains as a nurse – something he has always dreamed of and paid for by compensation he received after his attack.
