An elderly woman has died in Northampton after waiting nearly an hour-and-a-half for an ambulance when she fell over.

Phyllis Asten, 87, was letting out her dog in the garden of her bungalow in Spencer on Tuesday when she fell, her family said.

Her nine-year-old great-grandson Callum Wright was at her house and he raised the alarm with neighbours who called 999 shortly after 4.30pm.

An ambulance arrived just before 6pm and took Mrs Asten, who was conscious, to Northampton General Hospital.

A spokesman for East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) said that as paramedics were waiting to give a clinical handover to Accident and Emergency staff Mrs Asten went into cardiac arrest. She was taken to the resuscitation area where doctors managed to revive her but she later died.

Michael Diggin, Mrs Asten’s son-in-law, arrived at her house not long after her accident and said she broke her hip as she fell on to concrete slabs.

A councillor has called for the Great Western Ambulance Trust to be disbanded after the death of an 88-year-old woman who faced a “totally unacceptable” wait for treatment.

Doreen Wignall slipped on ice and fell, hitting her head, in Ludgershall on December 17.

A paramedic took almost an hour and a half to reach her, and then there was a 21-minute wait for an ambulance to take her to Salisbury Hospital, where she died two days later.

Tidworth’s cllr Mark Connolly said: “The poor lady was left waiting in the open on a cold and wet morning, with passers-by trying to keep her warm.

“If it had been my mum lying there, I’m sure I’d have been incandescent with rage.

Sally Evans endured a night of excruciating pain after shattering her leg in a fall – because an ambulance did not come for six-and-a-half hours.

The 46 year-old, from Portskewett suffered compound fractures to her tibia and fibula bones in her lower left leg after slipping from decking in the family garden.

Her husband Dave, who branded the service “pathetic and ridiculous”, called for an ambulance at around 1.15am on Sunday, July 5. But his wife was destined to spend the small hours in agony, broken bone pushing against her skin, because despite three more calls, no-one arrived until around 7.30am.

Even then, Mrs Evans was denied much-needed morphine because the ambulance crew did not have the correct key to unlock the container it was kept in.

Margaret Curran was shocked to find crews have “no duty to turn up within any particular timeframe”.

Scottish Ambulance Service bosses made the revelation while being sued over the 2003 death of Nikki Aitken, 15.

She died of an epileptic fit after waiting 32 minutes at her home in Ibrox, Glasgow, as three crews sat idle nearby.

A man with a suspected crushed foot lay in agony for an hour and 20 minutes while he waited for an ambulance that never came.

The man was delivering drinks to Castle off-licence Simply Drinks, in Chester Road, when a cage full of two-litre drinks bottles tipped over and on to his foot.

This happened at noon on Thursday and the ambulance service was called immediately.

But at 1.20pm staff from the neighbouring newsagents cancelled the ambulance because the man’s colleagues had reached him from St Helens first.

An ambulance trust has apologised for allowing a woman to wait for more than two hours for paramedics after she fell outside her friend’s Hampshire home.

Lynne Hixon, 62, of North Baddersley, who broke her hip, said what occurred to her last December was “disgusting”.

South Central Ambulance Service should respond to 95% of non life-threatening category B incidents within 19 minutes.

The trust said Mrs Hixon’s situation was “unacceptable” and that the number of calls was up 30% last winter.

However, it added that it responded to 81% of category B incidents within the required time last December.

The father of a six-year-old boy with type 1 diabetes has voiced concerns about emergency care provision in the Omagh district after his son was forced to wait around four hours to receive vital medication.

Shortly after midnight last Wednesday morning, it was discovered that the young boy’s blood sugar levels were dangerously low.

Doctors at the Royal Hospital in Belfast, where the boy is normally treated, decided it was too perilous for him to make the long journey up the M1 and told his father to seek immediate medical attention from the closest hospital.

The Omagh man, who wishes to remain anonymous, brought his son to the local Urgent Care and Treatment Centre (UCTC), but there was no doctor cover available and nursing staff were not permitted to provide the crucial dextrose infusion drip required to increase the boy’s blood sugar levels.

They then had to wait 40 minutes for an ambulance to travel from Enniskillen to bring the boy to the Erne Hospital, a journey which took over half an hour, and a further 90 minutes for him to be properly assessed after his arrival.

Finally, the boy received the dextrose drip line he required four hours after the ordeal began. His father pointed out that his son would have been treated much quicker if he had travelled to the Royal in the first place – a journey doctors advised him against due to the seriousness of the situation.

He said, “From entering the UCTC in Omagh, waiting for an ambulance and then travelling to the Erne took almost an hour and a half in total. Yet this was still 30 minutes longer than the journey to Belfast we were warned against taking because it was deemed too dangerous by doctors as my son needed medical assistance immediately.”
