A chief constable has said he fears an injured person will die in the back of a police car heading for hospital due to poor ambulance response times

More than 500 emergency vehicles on 999 calls crashed last year in Lancashired. Figures released under the Freedom of Information Act show police cars, ambulances and fire engines crashed 592 times on the county’s streets in 2008.

An inquiry is under way after a police officer pulled an ambulance over as it raced to an emergency – leading to another ambulance having to be dispatched.
